What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent, sophisticated solution for replacing one or more teeth, made from biocompatible materials. By mimicking the natural structure of a tooth from the root up, dental implants help restore both the form and function of your original teeth.

A dental implant often refers to the entire tooth replacement (root and crown), but it actually consists of three components:

  • the implant itself, a medical-grade, titanium screw component that is fused into the jawbone to replace the original tooth root
  • the abutment, a connecting piece that fits into the implant
  • the prosthetic, porcelain dental crown, which securely attaches to the implant via the abutment, forming the 'tooth' that we can see and feel

Where multiple adjacent teeth need to be replaced, a dental bridge can be attached to one or more implants, instead of placing a separate implant for each tooth.

For replacing an entire row of teeth, All-On-4 implants can be a cost-effective solution, where a full-arch dental bridge is attached to four implants.

Why choose a dental implant?

Missing teeth are a common reality for people of all ages, whether resulting from unexpected trauma, dental decay, or congenital factors. Regardless of the cause, the impact of a missing tooth extends far beyond aesthetics. It can significantly affect how you eat, speak, and feel about your appearance.

Dental implants offer distinct advantages over alternatives such as dentures and traditional dental bridges, ensuring your prosthetic teeth look natural and feel just like real teeth.

With dental implants, our experienced Ascot dentists and West End dentists can help you eat and smile freely once more.

Compared to dentures, implants withstand greater bite pressures due to their structural integrity, restoring your dietary freedom beyond softer foods.聽And since they do not cover the palate, implants enable the full enjoyment of food鈥檚 tastes and sensations.

Unlike traditional dental bridges, implants do not require the cutting and reshaping of healthy, neighbouring teeth to make them fit.

Implants can also help prevent bone loss in the jaw, which reduces the risk of your adjacent teeth becoming loose. They also prevent the formation of hollowed or collapsed cheeks that can occur after a tooth is extracted and left unreplaced.

And of course, the confidence boost and mental wellbeing from being able to smile freely cannot be understated. Our smiles are the most universal form of communication, and many of our Brisbane patients find that replacing their missing teeth with dental implants helps them navigate life with greater social ease.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants work by the process of osseointegration, where the titanium implant is naturally and permanently fused with the jawbone.

Once the implant has been fully integrated into the jawbone for ultimate stability, our Brisbane dentists place a custom-crafted, porcelain crown or bridge on top of the implant that is as strong as your natural teeth.

Dental implants completely restores the form and function of your teeth, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.

It is like you never lost your teeth to begin with!

What does the dental implant procedure involve?

There are up to four stages to a dental implant surgery, depending on whether a single stage or two-stage implant is required.

We prioritise your comfort during the entire dental implant procedure. The placement of the implant is a precise, minimally invasive procedure performed pain-free under local anaesthetic. Many of our Brisbane patients are pleasantly surprised to find that the recovery is also easily managed with comprehensive pre/post-operative care including antibiotics and pain relief, allowing for a comfortable and predictable healing process.

Stage 1

Using very accurate surgical techniques, an incision is made in the gum tissue and implants are placed in dimensionally controlled sites (depth and width) within the jawbone.

For single stage implants, an abutment is then placed in each implant. An abutment is a metal connector that allows a crown or bridge to be attached to the implant. A temporary crown or bridge may be placed over the implant, and the gum tissue is closed to heal around the visible abutment.

If a two-stage dental implant is required, the gum tissues are closed without placing any abutments and allowed to heal for between 3 to 6 months, to ensure stability of the implant.

Stage 2 (for a two-stage implant only)

Once the implant is stable, an incision is made in the gum tissue, and an abutment is placed into the implant. A temporary crown or bridge may be placed over the implant, and the gum tissue is then closed to heal around the visible abutment.

Stage 3

An impression is taken of the implant, and the final, permanent, porcelain crown or bridge is then designed and custom-fabricated.

Stage 4

The temporary crown or bridge is removed, and the final porcelain crown or bridge is then fitted.
