What is a dental emergency?

While some dental issues can wait for a regular check-up, certain situations require immediate clinical intervention. You should seek emergency dental care if you experience:

  • any dental trauma
  • a permanent, adult tooth that has been knocked out or moved out of position
  • uncontrollable bleeding after a tooth extraction or other dental procedure
  • severe tooth pain that prevents normal activity

At le tooth, our Brisbane dentists' priority during an emergency visit is to provide immediate pain relief and stabilise the situation. Once you are comfortable, we will discuss long-term solutions and provide a clear, transparent treatment plan for any further care required.

What to do.

Knocked out tooth.

Immediate treatment, ideally within 30 minutes, is required for the best chance of saving a permanent, adult tooth that has been knocked out.

Do not put a knocked-out baby tooth back.

  • Find the tooth
  • Handle it gently by the crown, not the root
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it quickly with water or milk, but do not scrub it
  • If possible, put the tooth back into its socket, holding it in place with a wet gauze
  • Otherwise, keep the tooth moist in your mouth against your cheek, or store it in a glass of milk
  • Seek urgent, immediate dental treatment.

Severe toothache.

Often caused by advanced dental decay, symptoms of a toothache include a throbbing pain, tenderness and swelling of the surrounding area.

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce pain and swelling
  • Reduce pain with over-the-counter pain relief medication
  • Seek dental treatment promptly
