What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made, hollow, tooth-shaped 'cap' designed to completely cover and strengthen a tooth that is weakened, damaged or in need of cosmetic refinement.

Crafted from high-quality porcelain and designed to replicate the look and feel of natural teeth, our dentists in West End and Ascot offer crowns that are both durable and beautiful.

Why might I聽need a crown?

Crowns are primarily used to protect and reinforce weakened teeth, such as those with extensive decay or those that have undergone root canal therapy.

As these teeth are more brittle than healthy teeth, they are likely to suffer irreparable damage without the protection of a crown.

Beyond the strength they provide, crowns can also improve the cosmetic appearance of teeth, by customising their shade, translucency and anatomy.

Many of our Brisbane patients choose dental crowns to address teeth with severe discolouration, extensive chip and crack damage, and irregular sizes and proportions.

How do crowns work?

A crown acts as a 360-degree protective shield that encases the entire tooth.

A crown protects the underlying tooth by redistributing the forces of your bite over its entire surface.

By doing so, a crown significantly increases the tooth's structural integrity and ability to sustain heavy loads while chewing.

Since each crown is custom-made, our Ascot and West End dentists can tailor the colour, shape and character to ensure it blends naturally with your surrounding natural teeth.

What does treatment involve?

At le tooth, most dental crown treatments are split into two separate visits.

In your first visit, our experienced Brisbane dentists will carefully shape the tooth so it can accommodate the crown. A second visit is required to permanently fit the crown after it has been crafted.

Crown preparation

The key to a long-lasting crown is a well-prepared tooth.

During this visit, our dentists expertly shape the tooth's outer enamel to create a stable, tapered profile with a precise 'shoulder' at the gumline.

This intricate preparation of the tooth's geometry is essential for a flush, high-precision fit that feels entirely natural once your crown is in place.

Once the tooth has been prepared, we take a high-definition digital scan to begin the custom-crafting process.

We then carefully design the anatomy of your crown so that it complements your surrounding teeth, with a porcelain shade that mimics the translucency and character of your natural enamel.

While your permanent porcelain crown is being made, we fit a temporary crown made of composite resin to protect the tooth and maintain your smile.

Crown fitting

In your follow-up appointment at our West End or Ascot dental clinic, we remove the temporary crown and confirm that the permanent porcelain crown meets our exact specifications for fit and aesthetics.

The porcelain crown is then bonded to the tooth with a high-strength, medical-grade adhesive.

Finally, our dentists will perform a final assessment of your bite to ensure your new crown is both comfortable and functional.

What are dental bridges?

A traditional dental bridge is a bespoke restoration that can replace one or more consecutive missing teeth.

It features a continuous span of prosthetic, porcelain teeth, permanently fused to a dental crown at either end.

Fitting a traditional bridge requires two healthy teeth on either side of the gap, to which the crowns of the bridge can be anchored.

Like our crowns, each of our bridges are custom-crafted to match the shade, proportions and character of your natural teeth for a seamless result.

For a more advanced, standalone solution for missing teeth, we recommend patients consider dental implants.
