What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a common cosmetic dental procedure that lightens the colour of teeth by removing stains and discolouration.

Many people choose to whiten their teeth to help boost their confidence and mood.  After all, being proud of your smile makes you want to smile more!

While stained teeth are not always a reflection of poor dental hygiene, many patients with stained teeth try to remove the stains manually through aggressive brushing.  This is problematic because while brushing harder will not remove established stains, it can lead to increased, irreversible tooth sensitivity.

Professional teeth whitening performed by a qualified dentist is the most safe and effective method of whitening your teeth, although many over-the-counter (OTC) options also exist in the form of toothpastes and whitening strips.

What causes teeth staining?

Many foods and drinks, such as tea, coffee, red wine, leave behind coloured molecules called chromogens on the surface of our teeth, creating surface stains.

With time, the chromogens can even penetrate the outer enamel layer of our teeth, forming intrinsic stains.  These molecules absorb light, which gives stained teeth their typical yellowed appearance.  Smoking can lead to even more dramatic staining of teeth, due to the dark residue left behind by nicotine and tar.

Intrinsic stains can also be caused by certain medications, injuries, metal dental fillings and root canal treatment.

Surface stains can be easily removed by your dentist through regular dental cleans.  However, stubborn stains within the tooth itself can only be addressed by chemical teeth whitening treatments.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening removes stains by breaking down the coloured molecules on the surface of your teeth and, depending on the treatment, from inside the enamel too.

Professional hydrogen peroxide whitening

When performed professionally by your dentist, hydrogen peroxide is unquestionably the gold-standard in teeth whitening.  It removes both surface and intrinsic stains by chemically reacting with the coloured molecules to break them down.

Most commonly used at concentrations of around 25%, hydrogen peroxide has the most in-vivo clinical evidence for patient safety and efficacy.   These are studies performed on the teeth of real human volunteers, not tooth samples in a lab environment, and most closely reflect real-world conditions.

What professional teeth whitening options do we offer?

Our cosmetic dentists offer two types of complementary professional teeth whitening options, Philips Zoom! in-chair whitening, and Opalescence take-home whitening trays.

What is Philips Zoom! whitening?

Philips Zoom! is the most popular teeth whitening option amongst our patients in Brisbane.

It is a 45-minute LED-activated, 25% hydrogen peroxide treatment performed in-chair under the supervision of our trained cosmetic dentists.  The results are fast and long-lasting.  With Philips Zoom! your teeth can be brightened by up to 8 shades in one visit.

What to expect during treatment

Prior to treatment, your gums and soft tissue are shielded to prevent any discomfort or sensitivity that is common with OTC products.  The whitening gel is then applied to the outward facing surface of your teeth, and activated by a blue LED light.  The light helps accelerate the chemical reaction between the hydrogen peroxide and your teeth stains, delivering rapid results.

During treatment, our dentists can control the intensity of the light in response to any sensitivity that is felt to ensure you are comfortable.  Once completed, a desensitising gel or fluoride application is used to reduce any temporary tooth sensitivity from the hydrogen peroxide.

What is Opalescence take-home whitening?

Opalescence whitening is a carbamide peroxide treatment, which can be just as effective as Philips Zoom! in-chair whitening.  While the results take longer, the advantage is that you are able to whiten your teeth from the comfort of your own home!

Carbamide peroxide converts to hydrogen peroxide upon contact with water.  We offer Opalescence whitening gels with carbamide peroxide concentrations ranging from 10-45%, approximately equivalent to 3-15% hydrogen peroxide.

What to expect during treatment

When you choose Opalescence take-home whitening, our dentists prepare custom-fit whitening trays for you to take home.  Following the instructions provided, you then apply the Opalescence whitening gel to the trays and place them onto your teeth for 30-45 minutes.

Since the trays are custom-fit to your teeth, this minimises the amount of gel that reaches your gums, reducing any irritation.  This process is repeated at regular intervals until the desired level of whitening is achieved.
